Diurnal Changes of Mineral Concentrations in xylem sap of Cucumber seedlings

Abstract

|
Cucumber seedlings grown in nutrient solution were detopped at 2-hour intervals to study the xylem exudation rate and the mineral concentrations. Diurnal changes in the amount of xylem exudate showed clear circadian rhythm, reaching the highest at about noon. Mineral concentrations in xylem sap were highest at about midnight, also showing the circadian rhythm. H₂PO₄^- ion showed the largest day / night difference in concentration whereas K^+ ion showed the least.
